Apachean (Southern Athapaskan) | Southwest Apachean | Navajo | Navajo Painted Ware |
First posted by C. Dean Wilson 2013
Navajo painted wares represent the only Athapaskan pottery exhibiting painted decorations. It is represented by two types that display characteristics similar to those in Pueblo forms from which they appear to have derived but also exhibit distinct combinations of characteristics. Vessels were not slipped and fired in an oxidization atmosphere. Surfaces tend to be tan, yellow, orange, or buff in color. Decorations are executed in black and/or red paint, and tend to be relatively simple.
