Taos (Northern Tiwa)

The area defined by the Taos ceramic tradition types seems to conform largely to the boundaries of the Taos District; bounded on the west by the Rio Grande, the Sangre de Cristo Mountains to the east, the Red River to the north, and the Rio Pueblo to the south. Early ceramic components in the Taos region have been found in communities scattered across various drainages, but by A.D. 1250 the widely dispersed Tiwa populations aggregated into three pueblos, and from the Classic through the historic period the population was concentrated in the two Northern Tiwa speaking Pueblos of Picuris and Taos.
