Ware Name: Middle Rio Grande Gray Ware

While utility ware pottery from sites in areas defined here for the Middle Rio Grande have been either subsumed in types or categories noted for the Pitoche Brown Wares in areas of the Rio Abajo region to the south and Northern Grande Utility Wares to the north, pottery produced during certain periods appear to exhibit a distinct combination of surface attributes possibly that seem to be derived from areas and paste and temper that may warrant their assignment to distinct types within a Middle Rio Grande Gray Ware tradition. This may be particular true for occupations spanning the Classic periods characterized by jars with slightly smeared corrugations or smoothed exterior and polished and sooted interiors. These jars often reflect the use of fine iron clays and basalt or latite temper similar to that noted in glaze ware types from different localities in the Middle Rio Grande.
