Ware Name: Zuni-Acoma Glaze Ware

By the late thirteenth century and into the early fourteenth century, technologies associated with earlier widespread White Mountain Red Ware technologies began to diverge at about the same time that glaze paint began to be used and marks the beginning of Zuni glaze ware types (Mills 2007). By the early fourteenth century, glaze painted ceramics dominate painted assemblages in the Zuni area. Design styles characteristic of White Mountain Red Ware types appear to be replaced by naturalistic styles that are common in northeastern Arizona. Stylistic differences noted between these two wares seem to indicate differentiation and access to esoteric knowledge.
