Ware Name: Jemez White Ware

First posted by C. Dean Wilson 2014

Jemez white ware is reflected by distinct forms long-produced in the Jemez region. Types associated with this tradition are distinguished by a distinct well-polished pearly white slip and distinct decorations. Jemez Black-on-white represents the last true white ware, decorated with organic paint, produced by Pueblo groups. The distinct characteristics noted for white wares produced in the Jemez region may reflect both the availability of distinct clay resources found in the Jemez Mountains as well as styles that may be indicative of boundaries and identity associated with distinct Towa-speaking groups that appear to have long occupied this region.
